Living in community | October

[EN] This autumn surprised us from all points of view. First of all, both us and the children were amazed by all the colors that can be seen now in the surrounding hills and especially in the forest that we always explore with so much enthusiasm. Secondly, we’ve been taken by surprise by the cold in Cluj! None of us expected such weather, much less Beltrán, from Spain, and Pierre, who was hardly persuaded to buy a winter jacket. The volunteers from the Pahumi Rocks project co-funded by the European Commission through the European Solidarity Corps program spent October planning and refining their after-school workshops, animating parties, taking part in small projects in order to help and interact with the local community, but also putting into practice the best games and challenges for the autumn camp. Between two parties with pirates and treasures, David, Pierre and Lucia learned how to make piñatas. Pierre kept the animal he intended to create secret until the end of the workshop, then surprised us with a blue jellyfish. David and Lucia have put a lot of effort into creating a huge, party dinosaur. They became so attached to him that they even naed him Mr. Lizard. Fortunately, Mr. Lizard survived the party and brought many smiles - and candies - to the children. He also had a lot of fun at a mega-party with a DJ. Another thing that the volunteers improved on is balloon modeling: Pierre, Klara and Andi have created with great skills a monkey, a frog, a swan and a butterfly! At the after-school program all kinds of activities were organized by volunteers - from foreign languages, to IT workshops, art workshops and, of course, sports activities. Klara is responsible for non-formal English lessons and during the past month she taught the children some prepositions, how to form sentences using the verbs "to be" and "to have", how to present an imaginary friend and stories of superheroes. Pierre and David practiced the numbers, colors, body parts and elements from the forest with the children, in French. Beltrán taught them some of his favorite games and their commands, in Spanish. Him and Klara repeated with the little ones the names of the animals, the colors and elements of nature, in German. At the IT workshops, Lucia and Andi taught the children how to use the keyboard and how to type faster, through some engaging games. The older ones wrote a short presentation in Word and had an online drawing and guessing competition. As for sports, we’ve focused on volleyball and tennis. October was also a month of solidarity - we welcomed at Pahumi the children from the day center of the Christian Union in Romania and we went on a trip to the forest together. We’ve made a swing, ate plum cake and made new friendships. Klara got to know these children better, as she is helping them with a lot of enthusiasm, once a week, to solve their homeworks and practice English. As a sign of solidarity, we also went to the Constantin Brâncoveanu Baciu middle school from Suceagu, where Maria, our friend who helps us in the summer camps, teaches. We’ve brought a lot of colorful school supplies to the children and we’ve paid for their school books. We also brought Maria a little surprise - a fluffy black puppy, and we were rewarded with delicious pies, homemade by her. We’ve spent the end of the month with a lot of joy, because the children had a holiday - and a holiday means a day camp at Pahumi! Each day of the week was carefully planned by our team, and the central theme was the autumn harvest. We’ve played Eagles and Salamanders in the forest, and the next day we’ve gone to the farm of one kind neighbor from Feleacu, where we’ve picked fruits, vegetables and we’ve experienced the rural life in a household. Another day, another challenge: we searched for all sorts of natural elements in the surroundings and ticked them on the Scavenger Hunt list. No one has found a four-leaf clover, but we’ve all collected pebbles, acorns, nuts, spider webs and even beetles! We’ve also enjoyed the best cake that has ever existed, with the occasion of Vlad's birthday. The vegetables and fruits picked from the farm were hidden by volunteers, and the three teams of children used maps to find them. Back at Pahumi, we arranged them at the Harvest Fest stand. Of course, the apples, pears, grapes and walnuts did not last long at the stand - every time a child passed by the stand, something mysteriously disappeared! The main surprise of Harvest Fest was, for everyone, Beltrán's presentation on fruits and vegetables from Spain - it was held in Romanian! Each volunteer then contributed with a story, a presentation or a game about different traditions and about the autumn harvest. As for our lives, as volunteers, we can say that we feel like a family. And, as in any family, there are small misunderstandings (especially after a game of Catan), but we know that we are better together and that we are united by the love of working with children… and cooking, to be honest! We have half a fridge full of jars of zacuscă, and the other half with Beltrán's cheese (and don't imagine it's just one type of cheese, but about ten of them!). The girls' room, easily, but surely, turns into a jungle thanks to all the plants that appear on all the straight surfaces. The guitar noises coming from Pierre's room are more and more melodious. Andi is the best companion when it comes to talking about psychology over a cup of tea, and David is most happy to clean up instead of those who cook, for one (or three) portions of food. We will be back next month with news. Who knows, Beltrán will probably write the article himself! Until then, smile (even if under the mask, because responsibility comes first) and keep showing solidarity! Ne vedem peste o lună!  See you in a month!  À dans un mois!  ¡ Nos vemos en un mes !  Syns nästa månad!
